We are excited to introduce this year’s limited production drum set. This five piece set is handcrafted from solid Bocote. Cordia alliodora, the botanical reference, originates in Central America. Bocote (ba-co-tay) is often referred to as Mexican Rosewood and possesses much of the same qualities as Honduran Rosewood: rich lows, crisp attack, and a very definable fundamental note. The drum set features our Artisan Isolation Mounting system (A.I.M.) which solidly supports the drum with no additional drilled holes into the shell. A.I.M. ties into two top lugs and uses a bump stop against the lower shell for lateral support. The A.I.M. system also allows for quick changes of drum heads on the stand and blends aesthetically with the drums. African Bubinga Snare

African Bubinga, otherwise known as African Rosewood, originates from Tropical West Africa, Cameroon, and Gabon. Bubinga is a hard, heavy wood with characteristics similar to rosewoods. Color and density varies by species, but the heartwood is typically medium reddish brown or purplish brown with darker veining. African Bubinga is one of six wood species that we have determined to be our best tonewoods. This wood species is gaining a great measure of popularity among many drum manufacturers because of its tonal properties as well as its sheer beauty. More of our snare drums and drum sets are crafted from this species than any other species by far. For snare drums and drum sets, African Bubinga has all the right proportions of frequency spectrums and resonance to create one of the finest drums you will ever play. Timeless Timber Birdseye Maple Snare

During the logging boom of the1800's and early 1900's logs were perfectly preserved by the icy temperatures and low oxygen content of North American lakes and rivers. The virgin forests that the timbers came from grew very slowly due to the combination of hard, rocky soils, an extremely short growing season, and the dense pine canopy that filtered the sun's light from the shorter hardwoods. These recovered and salvaged logs are of antique quality and are as old as 500 years or more. Timeless Timber is highly prized and sought after. It is also very scarce. The drum featured is crafted from Timeless Timber Birdseye Maple recovered from Lake Superior. The shell is one solid plank of wood, steam bent with glue-in reinforcement rings. This drum features our solid brass, single point hex lugs in chrome. In addition to our single point lugs (hexagonal and round), we also offer two point tube lugs with hexagonal or round lug heads, and single point tube lugs in either style. Honduran Rosewood Snare

Honduran Rosewood grows exclusively in Belize (British Honduras), occurring in fairly large patches along rivers but also on inter-river and drier areas mostly between the Sarstoon and Monkey Rivers. Honduran Rosewood is typically pinkish brown to purple with alternating dark and light zones forming a very attractive figure, with a medium to rather fine grain. Denser than Indian rosewood, Honduran rosewood is well known for its tonal properties, being the preferred wood for Marimba bars. It is one of the heaviest of hardwoods. Tonally it compares well to Brazilian rosewood and Cocobolo, producing a well-balanced instrument with great projection, resonance and unsurpassed sensitivity. The featured drum is made from 48 blocks of Honduran Rosewood, otherwise known as segments. As with our stave designed shells and solid shells, block (segment) shells are available in a number of domestic and exotic species and can be custom tailored with a variety of custom options. The drum also features our solid brass, single point hex lugs in chrome. In addition to our single point lugs (hexagonal and round), we also offer two point tube lugs with hexagonal or round lug heads, and single point tube lugs in either style. Curly Hornbeam Snare

European Hornbeam is native to western, central, and southern Europe extending eastward as far as western Russia and Ukraine. The tree is small to medium in size and often has a fluted and crooked trunk. Hornbeam is similar in weight and comparable to Rock Maple, with increased attack and volume. This species is very tough and resilient, making it very suitable for making drum sticks and wooden handplanes for which it is also used. The featured drum is a solid shell, crafted from one plank of wood that has been steam bent with glue-in reinforcement rings added. This particular Hornbeam shell has an usual amount of curly figure. The drum also features Artisan Drumworks solid brass, round head tube lugs. Highly Figured Birdseye Maple

Birdseye Maple occurs primarily in Sugar Maple. The Latin name for Sugar Maple is Acer Suchrum. Sugar Maple is also called Hard Maple and Rock Maple. Birdseye Maple is a very hard wood with divergent grain structure caused by the presence of the "birdseyes." It is one of the most rare wood species on the planet that has a very distinctive pattern that looks like tiny, swirling eyes disrupting the smooth lines of the grain. Birdseye maple isn't a variety or species of maple, but rather a phenomenon that occurs within several kinds of trees due to an unknown cause. Some suggest that this is the result of a fungal or viral infection, genetic mutation, bird pecking, climate change, soil conditions, growth history, or some other mysterious element. Genetics are most commonly thought to be the reason for the small "birdseyes." The drum featured is a highly figured, and very rare example of birdseye maple. It is crafted from a single plank of Birdseye Maple, steam bent, with glue-in reinforcement rings added. The drum features our solid brass, hexagonal single point lugs in chrome. Australian Jarrah Snare

Eucalyptus marginata is one of the most common species of the eucalyptus tree in southwest Australia. The tree and the wood are usually referred to by the Aboriginal name Jarrah. Because of the similar appearance of the Jarrah tree to the Honduras Mahogany tree, Jarrah was once called Swan River Mahogany after the river system that runs through Perth. The tree grows up to 130 feet high with a trunk up to 9.8 feet in diameter. Jarrah is found in a 20 mile wide region along the coastal area of southwestern Australia, extending 200 miles southward from Perth. Jarrah is a rich, reddish timber and it is prized for its warm color. It is also heavier and harder than maple, yet it exhibits a very pronounced low end frequency and a very warm overall tone. The drum featured is a solid, one-ply shell crafted from one plank of wood with glue-in reinforcement rings added. This drum also features our solid brass hex lugs in our satin nickel plating option. All of our Session King drums come standard with A.I.M. (Artisan Isolation Mounts), designed by Artisan Drumworks. Patent on this design is pending. This system of isolating the shell from the bracket is both aesthetically pleasing, unobtrusive, and very strong and allows for drum head changes on the fly. Each A.I.M. is painstakingly crafted for your individual drum(s)and comes with L-rod (10mm) type tom brackets. RIMS-type mounts are used on our Vintage Custom and Artisan Gig series drums.

Artisan Hoops are custom made to perfectly match your drum(s) or, if desired, to provide aesthetic contrast. Our wood hoops are handcrafted and lathed. Then a recessed cut is made under the hoop to allow the hoop to seat fully over the drum head collar, concealing it completely. Tension rod holes are also recessed, eliminating any interference when playing. Wood hoops tend to dry up the overall sound of the drum, attenuating some of the unwanted overtones found in metal hoop drums. The cross-stick sound is superb! Aesthetically, wood hoops add a very custom, organic appearance to your custom drum. Artisan Hoops are exclusively available on our drums and are sold in pairs.

EdgeCraft (I.R.R.)

EdgeCraft I.R.R. is a re-inforcement ring cut during the lathing process that is an integral part of the shell, not a glue-in ring. The benefit of I.R.R. is the strength and rigidity gained where it is needed, at the outside edges of the shell. This feature allows for the overall body of the shell to be thinner which produces a lower fundamental pitch and maximum resonance.

Hand rubbed Oil & Wax exhibits a soft, natural wood glow. Satin Lacquer has a silky, medium sheen appearance and offers a higher degree of protection compared to Oil & Wax. Mirror Gloss (TM) is the ultimate in a wet, glass smooth appearance. This high-end finish is has a UV component that will maintain it's pristine clarity for the life of the drum(s).
