Eucalyptus marginata is one of the most common species of the eucalyptus tree in southwest Australia. The tree and the wood are usually referred to by the Aboriginal name Jarrah. Because of the similar appearance of the Jarrah tree to the Honduras Mahogany tree, Jarrah was once called Swan River Mahogany after the river system that runs through Perth. The tree grows up to 130 feet high with a trunk up to 9.8 feet in diameter. Jarrah is found in a 20 mile wide region along the coastal area of southwestern Australia, extending 200 miles southward from Perth.
Jarrah is a rich, reddish timber and it is prized for its warm color. It is also heavier and harder than maple, yet it exhibits a very pronounced low end frequency and a very warm overall tone.
